Pinner Street-Suffolk, Virginia.  Salary $7.25 - $10.71

General Statement of Duties:

Under the supervision of the Property Manager performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of a variety of buildings and facilities structures.


Essential Job Functions (Illustrative Only):

  1. Performs the semi-skilled tasks in assisting the Maintenance Mechanic on assigned work projects.
  2. Performs general repair and maintenance work on structures, related physical facilities and equipment.
  3. Repairs doors and windows and makes simple installation of hardwood.
  4. Removes and replaces faucets and fixtures, and replaces washers and gaskets.
  5. Performs maintenance painting as necessary. 
  6. May operate light trucks or other equipment to pick up and deliver equipment and supplies.
  7. Performs the semi-skilled tasks required for the proper servicing and operation of power equipment used in grounds maintenance.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

  1. Any combination equivalent to completion of the tenth (10th) grade and one (1) year of experience using the tools of the trade in general construction and building maintenance work.
  2. Knowledge of common methods, materials, and equipment used in the carpentry, painting, electrical and mechanical trades. 
  3. Ability to use, operate and care for power and hand tools related to the building, mechanical, and grounds maintenance trades
  4. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  5. Ability to work cooperatively with others.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Work requires constant need to be on feet, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, lifting, and carrying of materials and equipment of varying weights.
  2. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  3. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  4. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  5. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
  6. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Special Requirements:

  1. Valid driver’s license required and must maintain eligibility for coverage under the Authority’s automobile insurance.

  2. Must pass a drug screen.

  3. Must supply a criminal background record.
