The Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority will be accepting applications for the  position of OCCUPANCY SPECIALIST until filled.  You must submit a S.R.H.A. application to be considered. Resumes may be attached to applications.  We are located at 530 E. Pinner Street-Suffolk, Virginia.  Salary $14.50 - $15.25

General Statement of Duties:

Under supervision of the Housing Operations Director is responsible for taking applications and determining eligibility of applicants for participation in public housing program.  Maintains waiting list according to the federal and local preferences.  Responsible for project files and some light typing.  Performs other duties as assigned.

  1. Determines eligibility of applicants for participation in public housing programs.  This includes the initial information in-take interview, processing and verifying applications and credit reports, police/landlord checks where applicable, and the final determination of eligibility based on established Authority Policies.
  2. Screens all applicants for public housing.
  3. Performs some light typing.
  4. Maintain waiting list and selects residents for transfer within/between communities.
  5. Monitors all list to assure that the vacancy rate doesn’t exceed acceptable levels.
  6. Monthly occupancy reports.

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  2. Knowledge of and at least two (2) years experience in subsidized housing programs, preferably in low-rent public housing.
  3. Ability to type accurately.
  4. Valid driver's license required and must maintain eligibility for coverage under the Authority's automobile insurance coverage.
  5. Ability to work independently and to communicate well with others.
  6. Must be detail oriented and organized to handle multiple task.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
  2. Requires reaching, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions.
  3. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  4. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  5. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  6. The worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

Special Requirements:

  1. Valid driver’s license required and must maintain eligibility for coverage under the Authority’s automobile insurance.

  2. Must pass a drug screen.

  3. Must supply a criminal background record.

  4. Must obtain Occupancy Certification within one (1) year.
