SRHA Empowerment Foundation (formerly SRHA Empowerment Fund) was established in October 2015.
The primary purposes of the SRHA Empowerment Foundation are as follows:
- To provide scholarship or other financial and/or non-financial assistance, by loan, grant or otherwise, for the benefit of pre-school, elementary school, middle school, junior high school, high school, preparatory school, college or post-graduate students from or residing in the City of Suffolk, Virginia;
- To acquire donated real estate and personal property, including legacies, cash, checking, savings and investment accounts, by bequest, gift or otherwise;
- To provide educational and housing-related assistance services, including but not limited to scholarships, grants, transportation and housing services;
- To provide and/or otherwise assist in providing transportation to educational, medical or other necessary resources to persons from or residing in Suffolk, Virginia; 2
- To subsidize and assist children, teenagers and young adults to participate in youth organizations or other similar and beneficial educational, athletic, counseling and other activities in the City of Suffolk or elsewhere;
- To invest, re-invest and improve the quality of its assets;
- To investigate and select persons that might be deserving of scholarship assistance in their pre-school, elementary, middle school, junior high school, high school, preparatory school, college and/or post-graduate academic careers;
- To provide, as appropriate, assistance by loans, grants or otherwise, for small business start-ups; and
- To undertake such further actions for persons from or residing in the City of Suffolk, Virginia, as may be deemed appropriate for enabling, preserving and improving student/family successes and the quality of related education, housing, athletic, transportation and/or counseling activities.
Section 1.3 - Powers
The Corporation is empowered to do the following:
- To own and possess personal property, including stocks, bonds, cash and bank, checking, savings, brokerage and other investment accounts in which to hold its assets;
- To engage the services of one or more banks, brokerage houses or financial advisors in order to invest and re-invest its assets;
- To own, sell, assign, mortgage or lease any interest in real estate and personal property, including vehicles, and to construct, maintain, manage and operate improvements thereon necessary or incident to the accomplishment of the purposes set forth in these Articles;
- To borrow money and issue evidence of indebtedness in furtherance of any or all of the 3 objects of the Corporation’s business, and to secure the same by mortgage, pledge or other lien on the Corporation’s property;
- To submit applications for loans and grants to carry out its purposes;
- To provide scholarship or other financial and/or non-financial assistance, by loan, grant or otherwise, to or for the benefit of pre-school, elementary school, middle school, junior high school, high school, preparatory school, college or post-graduate students from or residing in the City of Suffolk, Virginia;
- To provide educational and housing-related assistance services, including but not limited to scholarships, grants, housing, home repair and maintenance, and counseling;
- To solicit financial contributions and support for its purposes, and to engage in fund-raising activities and campaigns; and
- To do and perform all acts reasonably necessary to accomplish the above-stated purposes of the Corporation.
